Violent Struggle and Arrest

An intruder alarm triggered at 1:40 am prompted officers to race to the scene, where a member of staff was confronting the burglars.

Upon arrival, Smith surrendered, dropping his crowbar and complying with police instructions. Knox, however, attempted to flee, raising his weapon and charging towards an exit and a police constable.

Despite his resistance, officers managed to bring him to the ground, though he fought violently in an attempt to evade arrest, even trying to grab a Taser.

Both men were eventually detained, and a key found at the scene led to the discovery of their getaway vehicle nearby.

Sentencing

Knox, 38, of Avon Road, Southampton, and Smith, 44, of Bullar Road, Southampton, later pleaded guilty to burglary. Knox also admitted two counts of assaulting an emergency worker.

On 13 February 2025, Canterbury Crown Court sentenced Knox to two years and one month in prison. Smith, having breached a previous suspended sentence, received two years and ten months.

The Impact on Communities and Businesses

Chief Inspector Mark Stubberfield praised the officers involved, stating:

"Knox was determined to escape by any means but was tackled to the ground by our responding officers, whose tenacious bravery and professionalism ensured he was disarmed. Thanks to their efforts, both men have now been brought to justice."

Crimes like this not only endanger police officers but also have a devastating impact on local businesses, shop workers, and the wider community. Violent retail crime fosters fear, damages livelihoods, and increases costs for businesses and customers alike. The police remain committed to protecting communities from repeat offenders who threaten public safety.
