Garden Centre Owner in Shock After Brazen Shoplifters Strike – ITV News Reports
Retail crime continues to devastate businesses and communities, with shoplifting incidents on the rise across the UK. ITV News originally reported on Monday, 24 March 2025, that a garden centre in Dorset has become the latest victim of an audacious theft, leaving its owner both stunned and frustrated at the response from authorities.
CCTV footage captured the shocking moment two men targeted Groves Nurseries in Bridport, stuffing hundreds of pounds worth of hosepipe accessories and other products into their coats before walking out unnoticed.
Charlie Groves, the sixth-generation owner of the business, described his disbelief at the brazen nature of the crime. Speaking to ITV West Country, he said: “I was horrified at first, then really angry. I’ve never seen anything quite as blatant as this – they came in with specially adapted coats designed to conceal as much as possible.”
Despite clear video evidence of the crime, Mr Groves says he has been left disillusioned by the police response. After reporting the theft to Dorset Police, he received an automated reply and was instructed to submit details via an online form.
Out of frustration, he shared the CCTV footage on social media, where it has since been viewed over half a million times. The video prompted members of the public to come forward with potential sightings of the suspects. However, Mr Groves believes the investigative process has been far too slow.
“We had valuable information within an hour of the incident – including a number plate – but a week later, the police still hadn’t officially viewed the footage. These individuals are still out there, and it’s incredibly frustrating.”
Dorset Police confirmed that while enquiries have been made, no arrests have taken place. A spokesperson for the force acknowledged the impact of retail crime, stating:

"Shoplifting is a corrosive crime that has a detrimental impact on businesses. We are working with community safety partners to identify prolific offenders and tackle theft hotspots. Through initiatives such as Op Shopkeeper, we aim to target those causing the most harm, using criminal convictions, banning orders, and civil measures to combat retail crime."
Retail theft has become a growing concern for independent businesses, with many calling for tougher action and a more efficient reporting process. Business owners argue that crimes like these not only threaten livelihoods but also undermine community trust and safety.
For Mr Groves, the experience has reinforced the need for urgent change. “The support from the public has been incredible, but we need a system where businesses and the police can act swiftly. At the moment, shoplifters seem to have little to fear.”
As retail crime continues to rise, many fear that unless stronger deterrents are put in place, incidents like this will become an ever more common threat to businesses across the country.
