Staff at the Waverley Street branch dialled 999 at 6:10 am today (21 February) after spotting legs dangling from a hole in the ceiling.

CCTV footage captures the intruder climbing down into the shop before looting around £200 worth of National Lottery scratchcards. He also stuffed crisps, washing detergents, and food items into a bag before escaping through a fire exit.

Response officers arrived within six minutes and found a man matching the suspect’s description in nearby Forest Road. The 50-year-old was arrested on suspicion of burglary and taken into custody.

The True Cost of Retail Crime

Shoplifting and retail crime have a huge financial impact on businesses and increase prices for the public. However, some offenders don’t stop there. Many are also linked to car theft, mobile phone snatches, garden shed break-ins, burglaries, and handbag thefts.

Inspector Liz Gaskin, from the City Central Neighbourhood Policing Team, said:

“This was fantastic work by response officers, ensuring a swift arrest. The store was closed at the time, but this was still a distressing incident for staff, and I want to thank them for alerting us so quickly.

“No one should have to start their shift discovering a burglar inside their workplace. As today’s response shows, we will always act decisively when local businesses are targeted and shelves ransacked.”

🔹 Thieves don’t just stop at shoplifting
